Winter Park Jump School
One day training up in Ely Minnesota
in the summer back around 86’ give or take Kris Severson was inspired to do
something that only he would do. I don’t remember all the details
other then he was challenged to jump naked. He can probably fill in the details
but he hiked right up there. Not sure if he hiked naked or got naked at the top
but it was all good. He got the flag with everyone watching. You could see that
(deleted adjective) sausage hanging backwards as he came down the inrun. He jumped
with some obvious hesitation knowing he could experience a
really bad weenie roast if he fell on the plastic. Well…it must have been about
a 5 knot crosswind because his Hogan was flapping to the left so he had to
correct it with his right hand to get back on the straight and narrow path.
Kris landed safely
and was about as solid as he could be. No telemark but great style. Will never
forget that one. A little embellishment for entertainment value, of course. Hey
Kris…any details you could add or correct?
Editor's note- "Hogan" is a medical term. Kris could not be reached for comment. Actually, he was reached for comment and his comments were completely ignored.
2nd Editor's note- Research team just confirmed that Severson DID walk up naked. Repeat, he did not disrobe at the top, but in the parking lot.
3rd Editor's note- There were very few women ski jumpers in 1986... and none in Ely, MN.

Randy & Bonnie (Rocky Mountain Oyster survivor- barely) |
1986 National Championships in
Steamboat. All ages competed, for, I think 2 weeks, on all hill sizes. It was
the first ski trip I got to bring my wife, Bonnie along. Ralph Smyalla
and Fritz Mittlestadt loved giving her a bad time! They invited her down
to one of the local establishments for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, not
telling her what the hors d’oeuvres were. She loved them……….until they told her
what they were! She was enjoying deep fried “Rocky Mountain Oysters”! She spent
the rest of the night in the bathroom! The next morning she was taken
to the Steamboat Alpine area, while the rest of us headed to Howelson Hill.
During our lunch break, I got a call from the local hospital saying they had my
wife. She had blown her knee out on top of Buddy’s Run and got a toboggan
ride to the bottom, and an ambulance ride back into Steamboat! They fitted her
with a knee immobilizer and let her leave with me, as long as we promised to
have it taken care of back in Wisconsin. The next morning, the Space Shuttle
blew up! I don’t know what else could have happened in one trip to make it any
more memorable! But, I love Steamboat and all the people there and have been
back several times. Hope I can return again one day, preferably in summer, now
that I am getting older, though.
